Life After Surgery

The bariatric procedure can successfully start patients on the road to recovery from clinically severe / morbid obesity, but surgery alone will not ensure long term success. In order to get done to long term healthy weight, patients must adjust their lifestyle. Patients should take personal responsibility for staying in control. Regular attendance for support group I’m proves patient compliancy with the recommendations for optimal weight loss and maintenance.

EXPECTED WEIGHT LOSS


Weight loss depends on various factors like the amount of excess weight, the type of surgery, and patient compliance. However, given the optimal situation, patients most patients lose more than half of their excess weight. A program of regular diet and exercise are very important for prompting and maintaining weight loss. Expected weight loss of around 55 – 75% of the excess weight is suggested from various studies. However, our series gives up to 85% excess weight loss on a regular basis due to the protocols followed in BAROS. An ideal patient should be losing an average of 5 – 8% excess weight every month.

GETTING BACK TO WORK


Individuals can get back to their routine of work-life depending on the type of surgery performed and the speed of recovery. In most cases, the patient will be back on their feet within 2 – 3 days and regular physical activity with in one week, while in some cases it may take up to 2 weeks, especially in super obese patients with severe associated diseases like sleep apnoea and arthritis. Most of our patient will hit their work between 1 – 2 weeks. However, patients are recommended to restrain from heavy physically strenuous work for a period of 4 weeks until they get back to regular eating habits.
